CD Review: Fred Hammond Somethin Bout Love   PDF  Print  E-mail
Fans nationwide are saying it over and over: “Fred Hammond has done it again!” The Detroit Native has released a gospel blockbuster that is wowing fans and has excited the gospel industry again. Fred Hammond released the welcoming urban-inspired album, ‘Somethin’ Bout Love’ in June 2004.

The songs radiate with a strong anointing that expectant listeners will experience on a deep personal level. The lyrics delve into everyday life as a Christian. Hammond ceremoniously inspires us with songs of God’s love and how He manifests this love to us all.

Distinguished and noted as one of gospel’s greatest contemporary artists, Fred Hammond started his singing career at the age of 12. He sang in his church choir, and played bass for The Winans. Later on, he spent more than a decade, singing with the famed gospel group, Commissioned.  Since that time, Fred Hammond has launched a solo singing career, and has released some of the most celebrated albums in contemporary gospel. On his album, The Spirit of David, he used his powerful voice and range of musical talent to share an equally powerful message. He was united with Radical for Christ, a group of singers that he introduced with his project, The Inner Court. Fred Hammond went on to produce other successful albums, such as Speak those Things, and Purpose by Design.

Not only does Fred Hammond sing he is also a songwriter and producer. He has written well-known songs, such as ‘Let Me Praise You Now’, and Jesus Be A Fence Around Me’. He does not hold anything back in his heart on Somethin’ Bout Love. Hammond provides us with an array of spiritually-rich tracks. He opens the album with a Southern churchy rendition of ‘I Know it was The Blood’, then taking us to rejoice with him on the bouncy lead,‘Celebrate’.

Fred Hammond’s previous albums have always delivered a stirring quality that has gained momentum over the years. Somethin’ Bout Love  is no exception. The 19-track project contains smooth ballads such as the prayerful ‘A Closer Walk With Thee’ and the classical song, ‘I Will Find A Way’. Hammond testifies that he will offer God praise, no matter what falls in his path.

On the bouncy track, ‘Loved On Me’, Hammond releases some positive hip flow, while Marvin Winans adds his special touch. The tracks continue to roll, as Hammond ministers to us on what God’s love is with the slow bluesy ballad, ‘Your Love Is’. With the backing of the choir, Hammond asks God to cover him, taking him to beyond what he understands/Your love is greater than what I can understand. In prayer before God, Hammond softly croons about what Christ did for us at Calvary.

The album ends with ‘Your Name is Jesus’, a harmonious, mellow track exalting the Almighty with the highest praise. The track completes an ardent and uplifting album that has so much to offer. Fred Hammond has indeed given us another work that demonstrates the powerful gift of God in his ministry and in his life.
